Exform is an antonym to inform.

To Exform a concept is to embrace an uninformed mindset in pursuit of new understandings.

To Exform a concept is to challenge default thinking in pursuit of a receptive and uninformed mindset.

Exforms is an experimental project acknowledging and challenging aesthetic biases through a series of short videos and conversations. It is a collaborative initiative by Glenn Dixon and Xisca Mairata. Each Exform is a short video and recorded conversation.

Inverted

The limestone caves along Western Australia’s south coast lent themselves to the inverted theme. This sub terranian world is beautiful, surreal and barely recognisable. When reviewing the footage I wondered if flipping the shots upside down would render them more or less comprehensible. When I performed this perspective ‘flip’ in post-production, I discovered the vertical orientation did not seem to effect the comprehensibility. The droplet of water in the opening shot sets up the perspective flip and toward the end of the film there is a brief re-orientation, where I switch back to the perspective as seen by a visitor to the cave.

The abrupt cuts to black were inspired by an exercise our tour guide encouraged when we visited the main chamber. I lay on my back on the floor of the cave and closed my eyes. I keep them closed for several minutes, listening to the sound of the wet rocks and dampened footsteps. When I opened my eyes I had no familiar reference to make sense of what I saw, a towering mass of hanging stalacites. It was a truly bizarre experience.
