Balancing Poetry and Information / by Glenn Dixon

Focus Forward Films is a project supporting film-makers around the world in creating three minute documentary films around innovative people who shape the world through action or invention. A representative and two film-makers from the program were present at the Melbourne International Film Festival yesterday for a public discussion.

It was interesting to hear long form feature directors discussing the challenges around crafting a film for the 3 minute short format brief. The art of balancing information with visual poetry was a re-occurring theme. I have experienced this with my recent work with Education Services Australia. It is my job to tell the story of a teacher in 2−4 minutes. Providing enough tangible information for the viewer while still remaining emotive and reflective.
